Focus: Twenty years later, the ICC reopens its investigations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
With Sarah SAMEUR, Attorney at the Paris Bar, specializing in international law, Member of the Association of Jurists for the Respect of International Law (JURDI)
The International Criminal Court opened its first investigation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in June 2004. It focused on murders, rapes, forced displacement of populations, and the illegal conscription of child soldiers in the DRC. Twenty years later, on October 14, the Court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, announced the reactivation of investigations into crimes committed since January 2022 in North Kivu. The mining region is plagued by the M-23 rebellion, a movement supported by Rwanda, one of whose founders, Bosco Ntaganda, is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence following his conviction by the ICC.
